Interview with Paul Smith

When did you start competitive driving?

2004.

What was your car?

Nissan Skyline R32 GTST.

When did you win your first race/championship?

I won my first event in 2012 at Lydden Hill, I also won the PRO BDC Championship in the same year.

When did you start competing outside your own country?

The first event I competed at was Poznan, POLAND in 2006 for the EDC Finals.

Who did you look up to when you started racing? Why?

My main influences and inspirations come from the top drivers from Formula Drift in USA.

Who inspires you to push yourself?

My team and my family.

Who do you think will win DMEC this year?

Duane McKeever – as he is on an awesome charge at the moment.

What do you think is the most important part of your drift car to help you win?  Why?

It's really hard to put it down to just one thing, it’s the whole package that’s needed.

Can you maintain your own drift car if needed? Are you a mechanic?

My father is the main mechanic on my GT86, I am capable of doing smaller jobs, but it's important for me to stay focused on the driving aspect when I'm at the events.

What do you enjoy most about racing?

The adrenaline rush it gives - pushing yourself to the limit.

Which sections of a track do you enjoy the most?

The corners.

Do you have other cars of your own?

I own a few other cars, BMW M3, Ford F350 Truck, ’65 Chevy C10 Truck, Land Rover 90, VW Caddy Van.

What has been your favourite car to drive?  Why?

Probably my BMW M3, as it's happy to either go to the race track or supermarket and is just a great all-rounder.
