Maxxis British Motocross Championship - Round 6 Report

Despite not having the best of days, both Elliott Banks Browne (HM Plant KTM UK) and Kristian Whatley (MBO Sport Yamaha) retained their red plate as championship leaders after a wet day at Desertmartin.

The wet weather during most of the race day made the track very technical but the track was excellently prepared and the Irish fans were treated to their home riders fighting for podium positions as the day progressed.

In a dramatic last lap manoeuvre, Bryan MacKenzie (Pendrich Kawasaki) snatched overall victory in the MX2 class with 3-1-3 finishes after leading the final moto, falling and then making a strong move to take his first visit to the top step of the podium, pushing local hero, Martin Barr (VMX Moto.com-Nutt Travel KTM) into second place with 2-5-1 finishes whilst Neville Bradshaw (Putoline Honda) marginally closed the gap on series leader Elliott Banks-Browne who recovered from a poor first race tenth to retain the red plate by 36 points with two rounds to go.

Even more drama in the MX1 class as series leader Kristian Whatley made a disastrous start in the opening moto and had to fight through from outside the top twenty to eventually finish 4th after taking advantage of some mechanical failures by some of his rivals. A seventh place finish in the second moto put the Yamaha rider under pressure but he came strong in the final moto – in drier conditions – to lead for most of the race before succumbing to on form Matiss Karro (Team STR KTM) who took a clean sweep of three wins. Tanel Leok (Route 77 MVR-D Honda) who was riding with a plate in his collar bone from the previous round, to take second with 2-3-3 finishes keeping his championship hopes alive.

The event was also the final round of the MXY2 championship. Going into the round with the red plate as championship leader, Robert Davidson saw his advantage disappear in the opening moto after he posted a fifth place finish which allowed race winner Brad Todd into the lead with one moto remaining. However, Todd failed to score in the second moto and a second place finish for Davidson was enough to give him the gold plate as championship leader, much to his delight. However, again much to the delight of the local fans, it was Glenn McCormick who stood on the top step of the podium to take the overall on the day with 3-1 finishes.

The next round of the championship will take place at Hawkstone Park on August 10th.
