Maxxis Drift Tyres Smoke to Victory at Silverstone

At round two of the 2010 Maxxis British Drift
Championship (Silverstone, May 23) Team Japspeed drivers
Danny Eyles and Shane Lynch took first and second, after a
closely-fought battle for honours around the sun-drenched
Brooklands/Luffield complex, and the Maxxis MA-Z1
Drift tyre was the talk of the event.
Both were delighted with the performance of the tyre, which is
manufactured from a specially developed high temperature silica
rubber compound and gives more grip as the heat rises, enabling
drivers to carry greater speed around the course. The tyre
provides the lateral grip and mid corner acceleration that is
essential to success in the high octane sport of drifting, yet it
doesn't delaminate or suffer from chunking but simply keeps going
until no visible tread remains. The MA-Z1
Drift also generates the all-important smoke that leads to
valuable extra points from the judges.
Championship sponsor Maxxis enjoyed prominent
branding, with two 10m high Maxxis arches framing
the entrance to the Silverstone paddock, and as spectators poured
in, so the drivers emerged from their garages to attend a magazine
signing. This was hosted by Maxxis at its British
Drift Championship (BDC) hospitality unit, which is the
focal point of each round of the series.
Unfortunately, reigning BDC champion Steve Biagioni in the
Maxxis-sponsored Team Japspeed 500bhp Subaru
Impreza WRX was sidelined with hub problems, going out before
qualifying. However, Danny Eyles put in an aggressive
performance to make it through to the Top 16 and then posted wins
over Christy Carpenter, Wayne Keeber and Phil Morrison to reserve
his place in the final. Shane Lynch was equally impressive,
setting up a showdown between the two Team Japspeed drivers despite
the fact that the Stobart/Ladbrokes-sponsored S15's new V8-twin
turbo engine developed head gasket problems which limited its
performance.
When Danny and Shane last went head to head at Silverstone
drifting witnessed one of the most dramatic accidents in the
history of the sport. This time the track was bone dry and
after two runs, in which the cars carried entry speeds of over
80mph around the course and the tyres produced plenty of smoke,
Danny was presented with the winner's trophy.
The 1-2 result puts Team Japspeed in second overall in the team
challenge, only three points behind Skyline Owners, while Danny
Eyles lies in second place in the drivers' championship, just five
points shy of Phil Morrison.
"Putting the Japspeed Maxxis S15 on the top
step of the podium at Silverstone was a dream come true, but
knowing that I had the best tyres on the market gave me so much
confidence all day long to run inches apart from the opposition",
said Danny.
"The tyres were soaking up the track heat to give maximum grip,
even with the 450lb/ft torque from the Japspeed monster going
through them, and I felt it was always going to be a winning
combination at the home of British motorsport".
