Maxxis elighted with ‘best ever’ British Drift Championship season

To the delight of tyre manufacturer Maxxis, the
official partner of the British Drift Championship, the organisers
have acclaimed the 2011 season as the best in the championship's
history thanks to overwhelming support for all three classes.
Such was the level of skill demonstrated over
the past six months that there was everything to play for at the
final round, held at the Nissan factory in Sunderland (September
24-25), and some very close battles provided a fitting end to the
campaign.
In the Super-Pro class Mark Luney in the
Maxxis-sponsored SATS Cosworth was lying in second overall going
into the final round. Although he took the victory and
maximum points on the day, it was not quite enough to clinch the
title, which went to a hard charging Matt Carter. The battle
for third was certainly one to watch, with 14 points separating six
drivers in the run up to the season finale, and although Team
Japspeed's Steve Biagioni overcame strong opposition to finish
second in Sunderland, it was Wayne Keeber who went on to take
third.
Like Luney, Team Japspeed drivers Biagioni,
Shane Lynch and Paul Smith used the Maxxis MA-Z1 drift tyre to good
effect throughout the season and were rewarded with the
constructor's championship.
In the Semi-Pro class Matt Campling took the
class win ahead of Marc Huxley with Belinda Challis in third, while
Pro class driver Michael Marshall clinched the Professional
championship. Ian Phillips finished second, which meant that
Grant Lacker, who was just nine points off the lead going into the
last event, had to settle for the final podium place.
"We have enjoyed another thrilling British Drift
Championship and as title sponsor Maxxis is pleased to have played
a key role in ensuring that the sport has been seen around the UK
by huge crowds of enthusiastic and knowledgeable fans," says Maxxis
International UK's managing director Derek McMartin.
"Taking the Maxxis British Drift Championship to
East Anglia, the North East and Scotland, as well as Silverstone,
where drifting was a highlight of the TRAX performance car show,
meant that many thousands of people could find out more about
drifting and since the tremendous support from teams and drivers
was matched by that of the spectators, we can look back over the
past six months with a great degree of satisfaction.
"The teams will soon be looking ahead to the next phase of
development work on their cars and some are already shaping their
plans, so we're looking forward to even more exciting drift action
in 2012."
