Maxxis impresses at BMW Car Club track days

Wednesday, January 13, 2010

Maxxis and Grouptyre, its exclusive UK distributor, were more than happy to oblige when Total BMW Magazine got in touch and asked to put the Maxxis MA-Z1 tyre through its paces.

The magazine is currently running a BMW 318ti Compact on long-term test and features regular updates on upgrades and improvements it has made to the car. Last summer journalist Andrew Everett joined BMW enthusiasts at a BMW Car Club track day at the Croft circuit and after getting some laps under his belt switched from Pirellis to the MA-Z1 high performance tyre (225/50x16).

Andrew was impressed with this ‘decent set of rubber’ and quickly discounted suggestions that Maxxis tyres can suffer from road noise, saying: “…I’ve not noticed a single decibel more than the previous 205’s. The car doesn’t feel squidgy in corners like it would on cheap tyres.’

When the BMW Car Club took a last minute decision to run an evening track event at Cadwell Park, Andrew was quick to accept an invitation and notched up 118 miles in the space of one and a quarter hours.

Again, he was impressed with the performance of the Maxxis MA-Z1s, writing in the Running Reports section of the December 2009 issue of Total BMW Magazine: “Well, if you want tyres that work well on the road and really stack up on the track, you won’t be disappointed by these and I doubt the expensive brands would do much better. Even some big name (and big price) tyres will start to go off after 10 or 15 laps, but even after 27 laps the Maxxis tyres were doing fine.”

In fact, grip was so good that the 140bhp Compact – the least powerful of the cars taking part in the Cadwell Park event – attracted comments on how well it was circulating. Andrew took great pleasure in carrying a speed of 90mph through Coppice without lifting which enabled him to catch up cars that had overtaken him on the long straight out of Barn Corner.

“Feedback is important to us and we were delighted to learn that Total BMW Magazine had such a positive experience with the MA-Z1, which is available in almost 50 sizes up to 285/30 ZR20 and has quickly established itself as one of our top-selling UHP products since its addition to the UK range in 2006,” says Maxxis International UK’s managing director Derek McMartin.

The full range of Maxxis high performance tyres is available exclusively through Grouptyre, the UK’s leading independent tyre wholesaler. Contact Grouptyre on 01928 706166 or visit www.grouptyre.co.uk or www.maxxis.co.uk for further details.
